MLB Roundup: Jones applauded, Machado buzzed as Red Sox top Orioles 5-2

BOSTON (AP) — Adam Jones received extended applause from Fenway Park fans a night after he was racially taunted, both teams were warned after Boston ace Chris Sale threw behind Manny Machado’s legs in the first inning and the Red Sox went on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Tuesday night.

Machado homered out of Fenway Park for the second straight night, a seventh-inning drive, and the Orioles turned an usual triple play in the eighth inning on a popup to short left field.

Before the game Jones received an apology from Red Sox president Sam Kennedy on behalf of the club. Many fans stood during a lengthy round of applause in the first inning, and Sale stepped off the mound to extend the reception.

But one batter later the game turned testy when Sale’s first pitch to Machado went to the backstop. Emotions have been elevated since Machado injured Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia on a slide April 21 at Baltimore. Pedroia missed the next three games.

Hanley Ramirez homered twice, Mookie Betts hit a two-run double and Sale struck out 11 over eight innings.

Sale (2-2) allowed two runs and three hits, and Craig Kimbrel got three straight outs for his AL-leading ninth save in 10 chances.

Orioles starter Alec Asher (1-1) gave up three runs and six hits in six inning.

HOUSTON (AP) — Marwin Gonzalez hit two home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning that rallied Houston over Texas.

Gonzalez hit a towering fly off Keone Kela (0-1) for his first career slam and a 7-5 lead. Gonzalez stood near the plate, seeing if the ball would be fair, before tossing his bat toward the dugout and beginning his trot.

Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Gonzalez hit a solo homer in the fifth.

Delino DeShields, Joey Gallo and Elvis Andrus hit solo homers and Jonathan Lucroy had a two-run shot as the Rangers built a 5-0 lead. Nomar Mazara hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Luke Gregerson.

James Hoyt (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings. Will Harris earned his first save.

Alex Claudio made his first career start. He pitched in place of Cole Hamels, who was scratched after experiencing tightness in his right oblique while warming up.

DODGERS 13, GIANTS 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yasiel Puig drove in four runs with two singles and rookie Cody Bellinger added three more with a bases-clearing triple as Los Angeles rallied to beat San Francisco.

The Dodgers managed 11 hits, including a homer by Franklin Gutierrez, and the Giants helped Los Angeles with nine walks.

Despite throwing 82 pitches the first three innings, Alex Wood (2-0) made it through the fifth to earn the victory.

Matt Moore (1-4) took the loss, lasting just 3 1/3 innings. Moore was charged with nine runs and six hits with five walks.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jake Lamb and Chris Herrmann homered off Tanner Roark, and Arizona bounced back from an early deficit to beat high-scoring Washington.

Erratic starter Taijuan Walker and four relievers combined to blank the potent Washington offense over the final six innings after the Nationals bolted to a 3-1 lead.

T.J. McFarland (1-0) got four straight outs, J.J. Hoover and Jorge De La Rosa each pitched an inning and Fernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Roark (3-1) struck out eight over six innings for the Nationals.

ANGELS 6, MARINERS 4, 11 INNINGS

SEATTLE (AP) — Albert Pujols’ RBI double in the 11th inning scored Mike Trout from first base and Los Angeles held on for a win over Seattle.

Pujols’ third hit of the game was a line drive down the right-field line off reliever James Pazos (0-1). Seattle right fielder Ben Gamel made the risky decision to dive for the liner that he had little chance of getting and it bounced up against the wall, allowing Trout to race from first with the go-ahead run. It was the 1,840th RBI of Pujols’ career and he passed Al Simmons and Ted Williams for 14th on the all-time list.

Deolis Guerra (2-1) pitched the final two innings to get the victory.

CUBS 8, PHILLIES 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Javier Baez came within a double of the cycle with four hits and three RBIs, Kyle Schwarber broke out of a slump with a three-run homer and Chicago beat Philadelphia.

Baez hit his second homer in two days and tied his career high for hits, and Kris Bryant homered and tripled for the Cubs, who won for the second time in six games.

Jon Lester (1-1) pitched long enough to earn his first victory of the season.

Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson (4-1) allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings.

WHITE SOX 6, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Quintana gave up four singles over eight innings and Chicago beat Kansas City.

Quintana (2-4) walked two, struck out seven and allowed only one runner to reach second base.

The Royals lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Starter Danny Duffy (2-2) allowed six runs, 10 hits and two walks over five innings.

TIGERS 5, INDIANS 2

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his 450th homer in his first game off the disabled list and Detroit beat Cleveland.

Corey Kluber (3-2) gave up five runs and seven hits with a walk in three innings. He struck out four before being removed with discomfort in his lower back.

Cabrera missed the minimum of 10 days with a strained right groin. On a cold, damp night, he left the game for a defensive replacement after seven innings.

Justin Verlander (2-2) won for the first time since opening day. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

CARDINALS 2, BREWERS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Martinez pitched effectively into the eighth inning and St. Louis once again beat Wily Peralta.

Martinez (1-3), making his sixth start of the season, retired the first 12 batters. Trevor Rosenthal pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in three chances.

Peralta (4-2) fell to 0-9 in his last 11 starts against the Cardinals.

BRAVES 9, METS 7

ATLANTA (AP) — R.A. Dickey’s floaters were more effective than Matt Harvey’s fastballs for the second time in a week, Ender Inciarte drove in three runs with three hits and Atlanta beat New York.

New York’s Jay Bruce drove in six runs with two homers, including a grand slam off Matt Wisler in the ninth.

Dickey (3-2) struggled to control his knuckleball but allowed only three runs and four hits in six innings. He had four walks. He also started in a 7-5 win over Harvey and the Mets in New York on Thursday.

Harvey (2-2) gave up six runs for the second straight start. Harvey allowed eight hits with three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Jim Johnson struck out Neil Walker for his fifth save.

PIRATES 12, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) — Josh Harrison hit a three-run homer — his third in two games — and right-hander Tyler Glasnow singled home two runs during a six-run rally that helped Pittsburgh to its first victory of the season over Cincinnati.

Glasnow (1-1) steadied himself after a rough first inning, highlighted by Joey Votto’s three-run homer, to get his first career win. He also singled up the middle off Scott Feldman (1-3) to put the Pirates ahead to stay in the fourth.

Harrison followed Glasnow’s first hit of the season with his third homer in five at-bats for a 7-3 lead. The six-run inning was the biggest allowed by the Reds this season.

TWINS 9, ATHLETICS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ervin Santana struck out seven in six shutout innings and Brian Dozier hit two of Minnesota’s six home runs.

Santana (5-0) lowered his ERA to 0.66 for the season and has allowed one run or fewer and gone at least six innings in all six of his starts. Fernando Valenzuela is the only pitcher to do it more when he went seven straight to start the 1981 season.

Sonny Gray (0-1) made his season debut for the Athletics, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out four in six innings.

RAYS 3, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) — Edinson Volquez struck out nine but allowed a career-high eight walks, and Tampa Bay took advantage of his historically uneven performance to beat Miami.

Logan Morrison hit his sixth home run and was one of only five batters to put the ball in play against Volquez (0-4). The Rays managed three runs off the right-hander before he left the game with a thumb blister after 4 1/3 innings.

Volquez became the first starter to walk at least eight batters and strike out at least nine while pitching less than five innings since 1900, the Marlins said, citing information from the Elias Sports Bureau.

Alex Cobb (2-2) pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since the first week of the season. Alex Colome earned his seventh save.

PADRES 6, ROCKIES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Yangervis Solarte and Ryan Schimpf hit back-to-back home runs off Tyler Chatwood in the sixth inning and San Diego beat Colorado to spoil Bud Black’s return to Petco Park.

Black managed the Padres from 2007 until he was fired on June 15, 2015. The Rockies came in leading the NL West by a half game over Arizona.

Chatwood (2-4) held the Padres hitless through five innings before they jumped on him. Trevor Cahill (2-2), who grew up in Vista in northern San Diego County, won his second straight home game.

MLB Roundup: Gausman ejected after hitting batter, Red Sox top O’s 4-2

0

BOSTON (AP) — Major League Baseball told the Red Sox and Orioles to stop their festering feud.

Then the umpires backed it up.

Hours after a conference call to tell the Red Sox and Orioles “Enough is enough,” Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman was ejected in the second inning for hitting a batter and Boston went on to win 4-2 Wednesday night.

“Given the situation and the tension between the two clubs and all the stuff that’s gone over the past few weeks, we’re all on high alert with anything,” crew chief Sam Holbrook said in a statement to a pool reporter. “There needs to be an end to this stuff, and I felt like an ejection was the right thing to do at that time.”

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was tossed later, after arguing a called strike in the fifth. On Monday night, the All-Star was the target of racial slurs at Fenway Park, and on Tuesday the Red Sox fans gave him a loud ovation.

He did not comment after the game.

Gausman was ejected after what appeared to be a curveball hit Xander Bogaerts. Catcher Caleb Joseph slammed his mask on the plate and manager Buck Showalter bolted from the dugout to argue. Gausman looked puzzled, at first, and then hollered.

Gausman said it was “pretty bush league” that he was tossed, especially since Red Sox starter Chris Sale was merely warned after throwing a pitch behind Manny Machado the night before.

“He did it on purpose, and everybody knew it,” Gausman said. “For him to get away with it, and I hit a guy with a curveball and they throw me out of the game, that’s pretty ridiculous.”

Josh Rutledge drove in a pair of runs for Boston after entering the game in the first inning when starting third baseman Marco Hernandez left with a strained left shoulder. Drew Pomeranz (3-1) gave up two runs on five hits, his fourth time in five starts he’s allowed two or fewer runs.

Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth, fanning Machado to end it for his 10th save.

Gausman (1-3) took the loss. Reliever Richard Bleier allowed Bogaerts to score on Rutledge’s single in the second.

THE CALL

Torre held a conference call with the two managers, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and Orioles GM Dan Duquette Wednesday afternoon. Red Sox manager John Farrell said Torre had told the teams to knock it off, but that there were no warnings about hit batters.

“I guess the best way to describe it is: I can confirm that there was a call and it happened for both clubs, to basically address the last two weeks and to say, ‘Enough is enough,'” Farrell said before the game, adding that he hoped that would be the end of it.

It wasn’t.
ASTROS 10, RANGERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) — Marwin Gonzalez homered for the fourth time in his last three games and Carlos Correa had four hits, helping Houston beat Texas.

Gonzalez had two hits and smashed a two-run homer off the batter’s eye in center in the sixth inning for a 6-1 lead. He hit two home runs against Texas on Tuesday, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth that rallied Houston to an 8-7 win.

Correa and Brian McCann sparked a four-run second inning with solo homers off starter Nick Martinez (0-1).

Charlie Morton (3-2) allowed a run and five hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking two.

YANKEES 8, BLUE JAYS 6

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit another long drive for his major league-leading 13th home run, singled to start the go-ahead rally and had the first three-hit game of his big league career, helping New York come back from an early deficit to beat Toronto.

Matt Holliday hit his 300th home run, a three-run shot in the first, and pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius drove in the go-ahead run in a three-run seventh inning with a comebacker that could have been an inning-ending double play but instead bounced off the glove of reliever Joe Biagini (0-1) for an infield single.

Steve Pearce’s third homer in two days, a three-run shot, helped Toronto take a 4-0 lead against CC Sabathia after 16 pitches. The Blue Jays led 6-3 before Judge’s two-run homer in the third, a 435-foot drive into the netting above Monument Park behind the center-field wall.

Tyler Clippard, Dellin Betances (3-1) and Aroldis Chapman combined to retire Toronto’s last 11 batters, and Chapman got three outs to remain perfect in six save chances.

NATIONALS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and doubled in the go-ahead run, Jacob Turner worked four innings of scoreless relief and Washington beat Arizona.

Robbie Ray (2-2) struck out 10 against the team that drafted and signed him in 2010 but allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. His effort helped the Diamondbacks set a major league record by recording 10 or more strikeouts in nine consecutive games.

CUBS 5, PHILLIES 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Pinch hitters Willson Contreras and Matt Szczur had consecutive two-out RBIs in the sixth inning, helping Chicago edge Philadelphia.

GIANTS 4, DODGERS 1, 11 INNINGS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brandon Belt and Gorkys Hernandez each singled in a run in the 11th inning after Jeff Samardzija’s excellent start, and San Francisco beat Los Angeles.

Hunter Pence also had a sacrifice fly in the 11th. Joe Panik, whose earlier error led to the Dodgers’ run in the sixth, started the rally against Grant Dayton (1-1) with a single.

Samardzija held Los Angeles to an unearned run in eight innings. He gave up only three hits, struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

Steven Okert (1-0) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Mark Melancon pitched the 11th for his sixth save.

METS 16, BRAVES 5

ATLANTA (AP) — Jose Reyes tied his career high with five RBIs, New York pounded out 20 hits and Jacob deGrom managed to hang around long enough to get the win.

Rene Rivera drove in three runs, while Michael Conforto and deGrom had two RBIs apiece to overshadow two early baserunning blunders that resulted in double plays for the Mets.

DeGrom (2-1) struggled on the mound, surrendering eight hits, walking five and giving up five runs.

The Mets jumped all over former teammate Bartolo Colon (1-3).

ROCKIES 11, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ian Desmond hit two home runs off Jered Weaver and drove in three runs to help rookie right-hander Antonio Senzatela and Colorado beat sloppy San Diego.

They were the first two homers this year for Desmond, who joined the Rockies as a free agent and missed the first 25 games after breaking his left hand when he was hit by a pitch on March 12.

Senzatela (4-1) held San Diego to three runs, two earned, and six hits in six innings.

Weaver (0-3) allowed 10 runs, five earned, and 10 hits in four-plus innings.

SEATTLE (AP) — Jarrod Dyson’s two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning pulled Seattle even, Jean Segura followed with a two-run single to take the lead and the Mariners rallied late for a victory over Los Angeles.

Singles by Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia, and a walk to Taylor Motter off Angels reliever Blake Parker (0-2) loaded the bases with two outs. Dyson fell behind 0-2 but dropped a double off the end of the bat into shallow right field to score two and pull the Mariners even. Segura then chopped a single through the left side of the infield to give Seattle the lead.

Jean Machi (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning and Edwin Diaz worked a shaky ninth for his fifth save.

REDS 7, PIRATES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) — Billy Hamilton ended one of the major leagues’ longest home run droughts with a three-run shot, and Devin Mesoraco hit his first in more than two years, powering Cincinnati over Pittsburgh.

MARLINS 10, RAYS 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — J.T. Realmuto drove in four runs, Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run double in Miami’s five-run sixth inning, and the Marlins beat Tampa Bay.

Castro, a three-time All-Star with the Cubs before he was traded to the Yankees in December 2015, hit an RBI double in New York’s five-run first. He drove a 3-1 pitch from reliever Felix Pena deep into the bleachers in left for a two-run shot in the fourth, giving the Yankees an 8-0 lead.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ryan Zimmerman homered, drove in three runs and led Washington over Philadelphia.

A.J. Cole (1-0) allowed a run over six innings in his first start of the season and helped the Nationals win their fourth straight game.

The Nationals lead the majors with a 21-9 record and won the last two games without 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper. Harper strained his left groin on Thursday and could return to the lineup Sunday.

Zimmerman’s 13th homer of the season gave the Nationals a 2-1 lead and gave him a 13-game hitting streak. Anthony Rendon hit a three-run homer off Phillies starter Vince Velasquez (2-3) in the sixth.

NEW YORK (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera doubled to spark a five-run first inning against fill-in starter Odrisamer Despaigne (0-1), then joined New York’s long injury list when he hurt his left thumb and was forced to leave a rout of Miami.

Jay Bruce drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, and Michael Conforto forced home runs with a pair of bases-loaded walks as the Mets won for the sixth time in eight games. Miami has lost nine of 11.

A sloppy evening included a 39-minute rain delay after Cabrera landed on his thumb diving for Marcell Ozuna’s ground single through the shortstop hole in the third inning.

Robert Gsellman (2-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings for New York.

ORIOLES 6, WHITE SOX 5

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylan Bundy pitched six effective innings to earn his fourth straight victory, Trey Mancini homered and drove in three runs and Baltimore beat Chicago.

Bundy (5-1) allowed three runs and six hits, walking one and striking out three.

Reds rookie left-hander Amir Garrett (3-2) turned in his fifth start of six or more innings in six appearances.

Left-hander Ty Blach (0-2) became the first Giants pitcher to allow as many as 10 runs in one game since the San Diego Padres scored 10 in 5 1/3 innings against Jamey Wright during a 10-4 win at San Francisco on May 1, 2006.

After equaling last season’s loss total in less than a month, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner finally got to pitch with a lead again when Boston took advantage of a costly Minnesota error and scored eight two-out runs in the second. Porcello (2-4) cruised the rest of the way, allowing only Robbie Grossman’s homer in the third.

MLB Roundup: New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs combine for 48 strikeouts in 18-inning New York win

CHICAGO (AP) — Starlin Castro drove in Aaron Hicks with a fielder’s choice in the 18th inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 early Monday morning in the majors’ longest interleague game ever by innings.

The teams combined for a major league-record 48 strikeouts in baseball’s longest game of the season by innings, wrapping up in a tidy 6 hours, 5 minutes.

Chicago trailed 4-1 before it rallied in the ninth against Aroldis Chapman, who helped the Cubs win the World Series last year for the first time since 1908.

Hicks struck out four times, but he came up with a huge play in the final inning. He led off with a bunt single against Pedro Strop (0-2) and advanced to second when catcher Willson Contreras threw it into right field for an error. With one out and Hicks on third, Castro hit a bouncer up the middle. Shortstop Addison Russell tried to throw home, but it was wide and Hicks scored easily.

Chasen Shreve (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings, striking out pinch-hitting pitcher Kyle Hendricks with runners on first and second for the final out in New York’s fifth straight win. The Yankees (20-9) improved to 19-5 since they opened the season with four losses in five games. They also matched their high-water mark from last season at 11 games over. 500.

MARLINS 7, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) — Shortly after scheduled starter Matt Harvey was suspended by the New York Mets, Giancarlo Stanton hit two more monstrous home runs off fill-in Adam Wilk that led the Miami Marlins to victory.

Harvey was suspended three days without pay for an undisclosed violation of team rules. General manager Sandy Alderson announced the punishment in a brief statement before the game.

Making his first start of the year while Edinson Volquez recovers from a blister problem, Jose Urena (1-0) and three relievers combined on a one-hitter as the Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak and handed the Mets their first shutout this season. Rene Rivera led off the sixth inning with a clean single against Urena.

Wilk (0-1) was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas on short notice to make his first major league appearance since 2015. The journeyman left-hander was no match for Stanton, whose 20 home runs at Citi Field are the most at any visiting ballpark by a player since 2011.

NEW YORK (AP) — Zack Wheeler pitched two-hit ball against the team that traded him, Michael Conforto homered and the New York Mets scored four times in the first inning Tuesday night on the way to a 6-1 victory over the staggering San Francisco Giants.

Hours after Matt Harvey returned from his three-day suspension with a string of contrite apologies, the banged-up Mets began moving on from their latest commotion. Despite all the injuries and turmoil, New York (16-16) has righted itself on the field by winning eight of 11 following a six-game slide.

Jeff Samardzija (0-5) and the Giants, outhit 13-2, are headed in the opposite direction after their fifth consecutive defeat and eighth in 10 games. San Francisco, with three World Series titles and four playoff appearances since 2010, had the majors’ worst record at 11-23.

The team got more bad news moments before the first pitch when All-Star closer Mark Melancon was put on the disabled list — though it’s not as if he has had many ninth-inning leads to protect.

Wheeler (2-2) went six innings in his best start since missing two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Merrifield also homered for the Royals, who won three of four against the Rays. Kansas City had lost 13 of 16 entering the series.

Jake Odorizzi (2-2) gave up one run and four hits in six innings for the Rays. He had allowed three hits or fewer in each of his previous four starts.

ASTROS 3, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Defensive replacement Jake Marisnick made a perfect throw from left field to nail Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate for the final out and the Astros held off the Yankees in a matchup between teams with the best records in baseball.

Unbeaten Dallas Keuchel (6-0) became the first six-game winner in the majors, helped by a home run from Carlos Correa. The Astros won their fourth in a row and improved to 24-11 — their top mark after 35 games since the franchise began playing in 1962.

Ken Giles wound up with his 10th save in 11 tries, saved by Marisnick.

Ellsbury’s single with two outs in the ninth inning put runners at the corners, and then the fleet leadoff hitter stole second. Gary Sanchez followed with a sharp RBI single to left and Marisnick, who came into the game in the seventh, fired a strike to catcher Brian McCann to get the sliding Ellsbury.

BLUE JAYS 7, MARINERS 2

TORONTO (AP) — Steve Pearce hit a three-run home run, Justin Smoak had a solo homer and finished with four RBIs, and the Blue Jays beat the Mariners, snapping Seattle’s win streak at four.

Marco Estrada (2-2) allowed two runs over six innings for the Blue Jays, who have won four of five.

Smoak went 3 for 3 with a walk against his former team. He had an RBI single in the first, walked in the fourth, singled home two runs in the fifth, and connected off rookie Sam Gaviglio in the seventh.

Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer but Seattle’s offense came up empty after the first inning.

RANGERS 5, PADRES 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mike Napoli’s second homer was a game-ending three-run shot and the Rangers beat the Padres.

The Rangers had been held scoreless by San Diego starter Clayton Richard until Napoli hit a 433-foot homer to left on the first pitch of the eighth inning.

Napoli topped that with a 448-foot shot into the club-level seats higher in left field to end a four-run ninth off Padres closer Brandon Maurer (0-2).

Elvis Andrus started the ninth-inning rally with a one-out single before Jonathan Lucroy followed with his third hit, looping a single that dropped just in front of diving center fielder Manual Margot. Rougned Odor then singled through the left side of the infield to drive home Andrus with the tying run and bring Napoli to the plate.

Sam Dyson (1-4), the demoted Rangers closer, worked around two hits in a scoreless ninth.

TIGERS 7, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Justin Upton hit a three-run homer and Michael Fulmer pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in the Tigers’ victory over the Angels.

Mike Trout went 0 for 4 as the Angels’ designated hitter after missing five straight games and six of the previous seven with a tight left hamstring. The two-time AL MVP hadn’t played since last Friday, and his 17-game hitting streak ended.

Andrew Romine hit a two-run homer as the Tigers got a rare win over the Angels in the opener of a four-game series at the Big A, where Detroit hasn’t won a series in seven tries since August 2009. The Tigers improved to 7-23 against Los Angeles since September 2012.

REDS 3, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Zack Cozart had two extra-base hits, including an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning that scored the game-winner, as the Reds defeated the Giants.

The Reds won for the ninth time in 11 games and have won 15 of their last 20 games at AT&T Park going back to the 2012 NLDS.

The Giants lost despite a four-hit game from center fielder Denard Span in his first game since coming off the disabled list. The Giants, who have an MLB-worst 12-24 record, lost for the sixth time in seven games and for the 10th time in their last 12.

Cozart doubled to left center off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland (0-1) scoring Scooter Gennett, who tripled to right leading off the eighth inning.

Wandy Peralta (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He came into the game with two baserunners aboard and two outs in the bottom of the seventh and got Brandon Belt to fly out to left.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Fresh from getting a big deal, Bryce Harper hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning that sent the Washington Nationals over the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Saturday night.

Hours before the game, the Nationals announced they had reached agreement with Harper on a $21,625,000 contract for the 2018 season, covering the slugging outfielder through his last year before he can become a free agent.

Then in the ninth, the 24-year-old star provided an immediate payoff. Pinch hitter Adam Lind led off with a single against Edubray Ramos (0-3) and two outs later, Harper lined an 0-1 pitch over the wall in center for his 11th homer of the season.

Trailing 4-0 in the fifth, Washington tied it on a two-run homer by Trea Turner and a two-run double by Ryan Zimmerman.

Shawn Kelley (3-0) pitched the ninth.

Joe Kelly worked the eighth before Craig Kimbrel finished the three-hitter for his 11th save.

The Rangers loaded the bases in the seventh when reliever Ryan Dull (1-2) allowed a hit and two walks before Liam Hendriks took over on the mound.

Andrus then grounded a single through the left side of the infield to tie it at 4. Mazara followed by lining a two-run double over left fielder Khris Davis and to the wall.

Wood (4-0) fanned at least one batter in five of his six innings and struck out the side in the third en route to reversing a dismal history at Coors, where he had gone 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in four previous starts.

TWINS 4, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jose Berrios pitched neatly into the eighth inning in his first start of the season and the Twins beat the Indians in a game delayed several minutes when a squirrel ran around the field.

Max Kepler connected to give the Twins a home run in 14 straight games, their longest streak since 1988. He also had an RBI single in a three-run fourth for the AL Central leaders, who handed Cleveland its third straight loss.

The squirrel appeared from right field with Michael Brantley batting in the Cleveland sixth. Play was halted as the squirrel cut across the infield. It eventually hopped into the stands and play resumed.

Berrios (1-0), called up from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, gave up one run and two hits in 7 2/3 innings. Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Springer led off with a drive run into Monument Park just after Jeter’s No. 2 was retired there in a pregame ceremony, and Bregman capped a six-run first inning with a grand slam that propelled the Houston Astros to a 10-7 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday night and a doubleheader split.

Josh Reddick homered off the facing of the right-field second deck a pitch after Springer’s first homer. Senzatela (6-1) was pitching on Mother’s Day for the first time since his mom died of breast cancer last July. Like many around the league, Senzatela used a pink bat to raise awareness about the disease. The rookie right-hander is tied for the major league lead in wins.

Nolan Arenado also went deep as the Rockies salvaged a split of the four-game series. Their lead in the NL West is back up to 1 1/2 games.

Los Angeles led 4-3 before Valaika hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Julio Urias (0-1).

With a first-inning shot to left for his 11th homer, Trout homered in three straight games for the third time in his career, also accomplishing the feat in September 2013 and June 2016.

MLB Roundup: Yuli Gurriel’s grand slam helps Astros beat Marlins 7-2

0
0

MIAMI (AP) — Short on sleep, the Houston Astros were listless and hitless until the fifth inning. Then their lumber stirred from its slumber.

Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam and Jose Altuve homered and drove in three runs as Houston overcame a slow start to beat the Miami Marlins 7-2 Monday night.

The Astros arrived at their hotel at 5 a.m. after a doubleheader in New York against the Yankees, and Dan Straily shut them out for five innings.

“Sometimes it takes a little while to get untracked,” Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. “Credit to the pitcher when he does that against an offense like this.”

Straily left the game after a comebacker bruised his right arm, and the Astros’ bats soon came to life. Josh Reddick doubled in the sixth off Junichi Tazawa (1-1), and after a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Gurriel pulled a 94 mph fastball over the fence with two outs for a 4-1 lead.

The Astros’ second grand slam of the year was also their second in two games. Alex Bregman hit one in Sunday night’s win at Yankee Stadium.

It’s the first time Houston has ever had slams in consecutive games.

Altuve shook off a fastball to the hand in the first inning and homered into the Marlins Park home run sculpture in the ninth.

“It was a long day Sunday,” Altuve said. “But we got some rest and did what we’ve been doing — playing really good ball.”

Joe Musgrove (3-3) allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings for the Astros (27-12), who climbed 15 games above .500 for the first time since 2005. They have the best record in the majors and are off to the best start in franchise history.

Houston began the game leading the American League in hits and batting average but managed only one hit in five innings against Straily.

The right-hander left the game as a precaution after he was hit near his pitching elbow by a line drive off Evan Gattis’ bat to start the fifth. A bruise just below the elbow was visible almost immediately, but after consulting with a trainer and manager Don Mattingly, Straily finished the inning.

Straily said he expects to make his next start despite the bruise.

“The ball caught me right on a muscle on my foreman,” he said. “I’m very fortunate that it wasn’t at my face or hitting any bones in my arm. I got pretty lucky in that regard. Hopefully it’s just a sore muscle in my arm.”

Altuve was hit on the left hand by a 92 mph fastball from Straily but stayed in the game and contributed a two-run single in the seventh, then hit his sixth homer in the ninth.

“In the moment I felt it a little, but then it went away,” Altuve said. “I was able to swing the bat, so I feel good, especially because we won.”

The Astros’ George Springer went 0 for 5, ending his 13-game hitting streak.

Justin Bour homered and had three hits for the Marlins. They outhit the Astros 12-8 but went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and fell to 1-6 on their homestand.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, METS 3

PHOENIX (AP) — Yasmany Tomas, Jeff Mathis and Daniel Descalso homered in a six-run eighth inning and Arizona handed struggling New York its fifth straight loss.

Jake Lamb also went deep for the Diamondbacks, the latest team to take advantage of a beleaguered Mets bullpen.

Tomas snapped a 1-all tie with a three-run homer off Hansel Robles (4-1). Mathis’ two-run shot also came against Robles, hit hard for the second consecutive outing after a strong start to the season.

Jorge De La Rosa (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win.

INDIANS 8, RAYS 7

CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians starter Carlos Carrasco left early with an injury, but five relievers kept the lead and helped Cleveland hold off Tampa Bay.

Carrasco was pulled because of tightness in his left pectoral muscle after giving up an RBI single to Brad Miller. The right-hander allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings and left with Cleveland ahead 7-4.

Boone Logan (1-0) retired both batters he faced. Andrew Miller permitted his first run of the season in the eighth, and Cody Allen gave up a solo homer to Peter Bourjos in the ninth before earning his 10th save.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit a three-run homer in the first, when Cleveland scored five times off Chris Archer (3-2). Francisco Lindor added a solo shot in the eighth.

ANGELS 5, WHITE SOX 3

Angels right-hander Jesse Chavez (3-5) pitched seven-plus innings and Bud Norris got four outs for his eighth save.

Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer for Chicago, and Tyler Saladino had an RBI triple. Mike Pelfrey (0-4) allowed four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

GIANTS 8, DODGERS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Eduardo Nunez was credited with a two-run infield single when Los Angeles pitcher Brandon McCarthy lost track of a baserunner and San Francisco beat the Dodgers for its season-high fourth straight win.

The hit by Nunez was the key play in a four-run fourth inning that broke the game open and helped Matt Cain (3-1) earn his second win of the season against the Dodgers.

San Francisco opened the inning with three straight hits off McCarthy (3-1), with an RBI double by Brandon Crawford putting the Giants up 2-1. That’s when things really got interesting.

With runners on second and third, Nunez hit a broken-bat grounder up the middle that shortstop Corey Seager fielded just beyond the infield dirt. Buster Posey easily scored from third, and Brandon Crawford scored from second after Seager hurried the ball to McCarthy on the mound and McCarthy didn’t realize Crawford was running.

BRAVES 10, BLUE JAYS 6

TORONTO (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit his 13th homer, Nick Markakis had three RBIs and Atlanta snapped Toronto’s five-game winning streak.

Matt Kemp had four hits and scored three times for the Braves, who have won three of four.

Freeman matched Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman and Milwaukee’s Eric Thames atop the NL home run leaderboard with a three-run shot off Leonel Campos in a four-run sixth.

Freeman has connected against all 10 teams Atlanta has faced this season.

Bartolo Colon (2-4) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings to win for the first time since April 16.

Blue Jays right-hander Mike Bolsinger (0-2) gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. Toronto pitchers set a franchise record by hitting five batters.

MARINERS 6, ATHLETICS 5

SEATTLE (AP) — Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager each hit a two-run homer, and Yovani Gallardo pitched effectively into the seventh inning as Seattle made the most of four hits to hold off Oakland.

Oakland scored twice in the ninth, when closer Edwin Diaz walked four of the five batters he faced to force in a run. Tony Zych relieved, and the second run scored on Khris Davis’ groundout. After an intentional walk to Yonder Alonso loaded the bases again, Zych struck out Adam Rosales looking on a 3-2 pitch for his first major league save.

Cruz’s home run, his ninth, put Seattle up 4-0 in the second as the Mariners capitalized on five walks by Sean Manaea (1-3), activated earlier in the day off the disabled list.

Oakland pulled to 4-3 on a solo homer by Davis in the fourth and a two-run shot by Stephen Vogt in the fifth. Both came off Gallardo (2-3), who allowed three runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

PADRES 6, BREWERS 5, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer with no outs in the 10th inning to give San Diego a win over Milwaukee.

Renfroe’s homer to left, his seventh, came off Oliver Drake (2-1) with Erick Aybar aboard on a leadoff single.

The Brewers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning on Eric Sogard’s homer with one out against Jose Torres (2-2).

The Brewers tied it at 4 in the eighth. Hernan Perez’s leadoff fly ball to shallow right off Brad Hand went for a triple when second baseman Cory Spangenberg and right fielder Renfroe both went for it and missed. Perez scored the tying run on Domingo Santana’s RBI single to right with one out.

CHICAGO (AP) — Slumping sluggers Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber homered, rookie Ian Happ connected again and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5 on Tuesday night.

Happ hit his second homer in his third major league game and Addison Russell also went deep as Chicago returned to .500 after a lackluster road trip. NL MVP Kris Bryant added two hits in his first appearance after missing three games with an illness.

The Cubs (19-19) had dropped seven of nine, including four of their last six at division leaders Colorado and St. Louis. Schwarber’s continued trouble in the leadoff spot and the shaky performance so far by the rotation had created some angst for a fan base expecting more of the same after Chicago’s historic World Series championship last year, but no one seemed a bit worried around the team.

Willson Contreras had two hits and two RBIs, and John Lackey (4-3) pitched into the sixth inning in the opener of a 10-game homestand.

Joey Votto, Zack Cozart and Tucker Barnhart homered for Cincinnati on a warm and windy night at Wrigley Field. But Bronson Arroyo (3-3) was hit hard in five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits.

RANGERS 5, PHILLIES 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish struck out nine over seven solid innings and Texas beat Philadelphia to stretch the majors’ longest active winning streak to seven games.

Nomar Mazara had a solo homer in the first, and Mike Napoli hit a two-run shot in the eighth. Napoli, who came in hitting .165, went 3 for 3.

Darvish (4-2) allowed four hits and two walks. He preserved a two-run lead by striking out Brock Stassi with runners at first and second after he allowed his only run on an RBI single by Freddy Galvis in the seventh inning.

Phillies starter Jared Eickhoff (0-4) struck out eight and allowed seven hits in his first career start against the franchise that drafted him in 2011.

ORIOLES 13, TIGERS 11, 13 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) — Chris Davis homered in the 12th inning and again in the 13th, and Baltimore finally held on after the second one.

Davis led off the 12th with a home run that started a three-run inning for the Orioles, but Detroit rallied with three of its own in the bottom half to keep the game going. Davis came up again with a runner on third in the 13th and hit a two-run shot off Francisco Rodriguez (1-5) that gave Baltimore the lead for good.

The Orioles led 7-1 after scoring seven runs in the third, but they squandered that big advantage and needed Mark Trumbo’s solo shot with two outs in the ninth just to force extra innings. Baltimore snapped a four-game losing streak.

Richard Bleier (1-1) earned his first career win.

ASTROS 12, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Unbeaten ace Dallas Keuchel became the first seven-game winner in the majors despite pitching only five innings, his shortest outing this season, and Houston beat swooning Miami.

Jake Marisnick tripled his season RBI total to six with a pair of two-run homers against his former team, both caroming off the home run sculpture at Marlins Park. Brian McCann also had four RBIs.

Keuchel allowed two runs, both in the first inning, and threw 70 pitches before departing with a 10-2 lead. His ERA rose to 1.84.

Tom Koehler (1-2) gave up eight runs in three innings, inflating his ERA to 7.04.

NATIONALS 8, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryce Harper belted his 13th home run, Ryan Zimmerman smacked a two-run double to add to his major league-leading RBI total and Washington held off struggling Pittsburgh.

Harper’s laser to the last row of seats in right field in the ninth gave the 24-year-old star a home run in every ballpark in the National League. He finished with two hits to move ahead of Zimmerman for the major league-lead in batting average (.388).

Stephen Strasburg (4-1) allowed three runs in six-plus innings, walking one and striking out three on a night he didn’t have his best stuff.

Josh Harrison had two hits for the Pirates, including his sixth home run of the season, and also avoided a tag at second base with an acrobatic slide in the sixth. Chad Kuhl (1-4) remained winless since the first week of the season.

ROCKIES 7, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charlie Blackmon hit a towering two-run homer during a four-run sixth inning and finished with three hits to lead Colorado over Minnesota.

Blackmon had three RBIs, Gerardo Parra added a solo homer and Kyle Freeland pitched six innings as first-place Colorado earned its 12th win in 17 road games.

Freeland (4-2) allowed three runs, five hits and four walks while striking out three. Greg Holland recorded his 17th save in 17 chances after Minnesota put two runners on in the ninth against Chris Rusin.

Byron Buxton hit a solo homer for the Twins, but Phil Hughes (4-2) had another disappointing outing. He gave up five runs, eight hits and a walk in five innings.

ANGELS 7, WHITE SOX 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cameron Maybin had five hits, including a tying double in the 11th inning, and Albert Pujols singled home the winning run moments later to give Los Angeles a victory over Chicago.

Chicago erased a three-run deficit in the ninth and went ahead 6-5 on Tim Anderson’s solo homer in the 11th off Yusmeiro Petit (1-0). But it was the Angels who pulled off the final comeback.

Andrelton Simmons singled leading off the bottom half against closer David Robertson (2-1), and Ben Revere singled with one out. Maybin, batting leadoff for the first time with the Angels, drove a double to left-center that tied it 6-all.

After an intentional walk to Mike Trout loaded the bases, Pujols singled to deep center field for his third RBI of the night.

RED SOX 6, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mookie Betts homered and drove in two runs, Jackie Bradley Jr. also went deep and Boston beat St. Louis in the opener of a two-game interleague series.

Bradley had two of Boston’s six hits, and starter Eduardo Rodriguez (2-1) allowed three runs and five hits over six innings. Rodriguez walked two, struck out five and threw a season-high 110 pitches.

St. Louis made three errors and lost for just the second time in 10 games. Lance Lynn (4-2) gave up four runs, two earned, and three hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one.

Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances.

YANKEES 7, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer, Chris Carter added a two-run shot and CC Sabathia got back on track as New York rolled over Kansas City.

Pitching on six days’ rest, Sabathia (3-2) went 6 2/3 shutout innings to win for the first time since April 15.

Sanchez drilled an 0-1 pitch from Jason Hammel (1-5) to center field with nobody out in the third, and Carter pounded a 1-1 pitch to almost the same place with two down in the fourth.

GIANTS 2, DODGERS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Brandon Belt homered for the fourth time in six games and scored the tiebreaking run on Brandon Crawford’s single in the sixth, lifting San Francisco to its fifth straight win.

Buster Posey added two hits and Ty Blach (1-2) pitched seven innings, spoiling Dodgers starter Rich Hill’s return from the disabled list. Blach allowed one run, five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

San Francisco improved to 5-1 on its homestand after a sluggish nine-game road trip when manager Bruce Bochy’s ballclub won only three games.

Hunter Strickland retired three batters and Derek Law pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, METS 4

PHOENIX (AP) — Yasmany Tomas homered against reeling New York again and Zack Greinke (5-2) pitched Arizona to a victory.

Tomas has gone deep in five consecutive meetings with the Mets, who matched a season high with their sixth straight loss.

Tommy Milone (1-1) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

RAYS 6, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Dickerson hit two of Tampa Bay’s season-high five home runs in a victory over Cleveland.

Dickerson hit solo home runs in the third and fifth off Danny Salazar (2-4). Colby Rasmus and Derek Norris also hit solo shots off Cleveland’s starter while Tim Beckham hit a two-run homer off Shawn Armstrong.

Jake Odorizzi (3-2) allowed four runs in six innings. Alex Colome pitched out of a ninth-inning jam for his 10th save.

ATHLETICS 9, MARINERS 6

SEATTLE (AP) — Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer and Mark Canha added a three-run shot in a five-run ninth inning that rallied Oakland over Seattle.

Oakland squandered a 4-1 lead thanks to a key two-run error in the seventh and Kyle Seager’s solo home run in the eighth that gave Seattle a 5-4 lead. But with a struggling Edwin Diaz removed from the closer role earlier in the day, Steve Cishek was asked to get the final three outs for the Mariners in just his second appearance of the season.

Cishek (0-1) was unable to finish the job, giving up a leadoff single to Rajai Davis and watching Joyce hit his fifth homer of the year to give Oakland the lead. Mark Rzepczynski took over and allowed Canha’s first homer on a 3-2 pitch.

Ryan Madson (1-3) got the win despite giving up Seager’s homer.

BRAVES 9, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, Freddie Freeman also had a two-run shot and Atlanta beat Toronto, sweeping their two-game series.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Clayton Kershaw took a share of the major league lead with his seventh win and earned career victory No. 20 against the rival Giants, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers avoid a sweep by beating San Francisco 6-1 on Wednesday.

Kershaw (7-2) struck out five in seven shutout innings and retired the first 10 batters he faced before Justin Ruggiano’s fourth-inning single. The left-hander moved into a tie for most wins with Houston’s Dallas Keuchel.

Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run double in the first and Yasiel Puig singled in a pair of runs in the sixth as the Dodgers jumped on Johnny Cueto (4-3), who lost for the first time at home this season.

Kershaw allowed three hits and didn’t walk a batter for the fourth time in 2017 as the Dodgers snapped their three-game skid and ended the Giants’ season-best five-game winning streak.

The benches cleared briefly after the top of the third when Cueto and Grandal exchanged words. It happened just after Cueto’s high, inside pitch flew wildly past catcher Buster Posey, allowing another Dodgers run.

ASTROS 3, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) — Lance McCullers paid tribute to the late Jose Fernandez and pitched like him, allowing no earned runs for the third start in a row, and Houston completed a three-game sweep.

McCullers (4-1) wore cleats with Fernandez’s initials and uniform number. Their friendship began when they were high school pitchers in the Tampa area, before Fernandez became the Marlins’ ace and then died in a boating accident last September.

McCullers limited Miami to three hits in six innings and lowered his ERA to 2.65.

The Astros (29-12) have the best record in the majors and their fourth consecutive win lifted them 17 games above .500 for the first time since 2004.

Jose Urena (1-2) limited Houston to three runs, one earned, in 5 2/3 innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, METS 4, 11 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Herrmann homered off Rafael Montero leading off the 11th inning, sending New York to its season-high seventh straight loss.

Montero (0-3) relieved to start the 11th, and Herrmann worked the count full, fouled off a pitch and connected on a belt-high fastball for his first game-ending home run in the major leagues.

New York went 0-6 in Milwaukee and Arizona, the Mets’ longest winless trip since 1999, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. At 16-23, New York dropped seven games under .500 for the first time September 2014.

Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) walked Matt Reynolds and Lucas Duda with two outs in the 11th before throwing a called third strike past Jose Reyes.

RAYS 7, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Dickerson hit a three-run shot — his third homer in two days — and Alex Cobb controlled Cleveland over seven innings as Tampa Bay completed its most successful road trip in a year.

Dickerson connected in the second inning off Josh Tomlin (2-5) and Logan Morrison hit a solo shot in the third for Tampa Bay, which went 4-2 on a swing through Boston and Cleveland. It’s the Rays’ first winning trip since last May.

Cobb (4-3) allowed three runs and six hits.

PIRATES 6, NATIONALS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Gerrit Cole shut down the best offense in the majors, holding Washington to three hits in seven innings to win for the first time in a month.

Cole (2-4) struck out three, walked two and received an overdue dose of support when Josh Bell smacked a three-run homer in the sixth off Jacob Turner (2-2). Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and stole two bases for Pittsburgh.

Turner cruised through the first five innings in his second start of the year, but ran into trouble in the sixth.

Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman, who began the day with the top two batting averages in the majors, combined to go 0 for 8.

TIGERS 5, ORIOLES 4

DETROIT (AP) — Tyler Collins snapped an 0-for-30 skid in style, hitting two home runs for Detroit in a victory over Baltimore.

Hitless since May 1, Collins connected for a solo homer in the second inning and a three-run shot in the fifth, giving Detroit’s offense a boost while Miguel Cabrera sat out with a sore left side. Michael Fulmer (5-1) wasn’t at his best, allowing three earned runs and 10 hits in seven innings, but the Tigers gave him enough support.

Justin Wilson allowed two baserunners in the ninth but retired Adam Jones and Manny Machado for his third save in four chances. Machado struck out to end it when first base umpire C.B. Bucknor ruled he swung at the final pitch. Machado, who had tried to check his swing, slammed his helmet down in frustration after the call.

Ubaldo Jimenez (1-2) allowed five runs in five innings.

YANKEES 11, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Hicks hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning, and New York piled up 16 hits against Kansas City.

Michael Pineda (4-2) allowed three runs and six hits over six-plus innings. The big right-hander was shaky throughout but good enough to win for only the second time in 16 road starts.

The Yankees teed off on Jason Vargas (5-2), who came into the game with a major league-leading 1.01 ERA. The left-hander allowed as many earned runs in the fourth as he had in his first seven starts combined, and was lifted after giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings.

Vargas had been unbeaten in his last 10 home starts. But he is 0-6 with a 7.15 ERA against the Yankees.

Starlin Castro had three hits for New York. Dellin Betances got one out for his first save since replacing injured Aroldis Chapman as closer.

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer and Whit Merrifield also went deep for the Royals, who scored three times in the ninth.

CUBS 7, REDS 5

CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs apiece, and Chicago handed sloppy Cincinnati its season-high fifth straight loss.

Kyle Hendricks (3-2) pitched six effective innings and drove in a run as the Cubs improved to 22-5 in their last 27 games against the Reds. Ben Zobrist reached three times after missing two games with lower back tightness.

Zack Cozart had three hits and two RBIs for Cincinnati, but Adam Duvall committed a big error in left field. Cozart extended his Wrigley Field homer streak to five games, matching a record for any player at the iconic ballpark.

Chicago went ahead to stay with five runs in the second against Scott Feldman (2-4), who was chased in the third.

BRAVES 8, BLUE JAYS 4

ATLANTA (AP) — Kurt Suzuki hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run first inning, and Atlanta held off Toronto in a testy game after Freddie Freeman left with an injury.

Freeman was struck on the left wrist by a pitch in the fifth inning. The umpires initially ruled that Aaron Loup’s pitch did not hit Freeman. But with the Atlanta star in obvious pain, the Braves challenged and the call was reversed after a video review.

Freeman headed to the clubhouse instead of first base, and X-rays were inconclusive. He will have more tests Thursday, including an MRI.

Things got heated in the late innings after Kevin Pillar apparently thought Atlanta reliever Jason Motte quick-pitched him, yelling toward the mound before Suzuki stepped in to calm things.

In the eighth, the benches cleared after Toronto’s Jose Bautista homered, standing briefly at home plate to admire the drive before flipping the bat away. Jace Peterson appeared to say something to Bautista as he rounded first, and Suzuki was waiting for Bautista when he touched home. No punches were thrown.

Atlanta has won three consecutive games against the Blue Jays. After the Braves took two straight in Toronto, the teams shifted to SunTrust Park to complete the four-game, home-and-home series.

The Braves, who scored 19 runs in their two wins at Toronto, jumped all over Joe Biagini (1-2) their first time up.

Mike Foltynewicz (2-4) went six innings for the win, allowing three runs.

RANGERS 9, PHILLIES 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Andrew Cashner finally won in his home state of Texas, pitching seven solid innings to help the Rangers match the longest winning streak in the majors this year at eight games with a victory over Philadelphia.

The right-hander from the Houston area also got his first win with the Rangers, who scored all nine of their runs in the first five innings after getting just six in the first six starts by Cashner (1-3) when the stocky 30-year-old was in the game.

Texas turned four double plays in the first five innings behind Cashner. The Phillies also turned four double plays.

Jared Hoying hit his first big league homer and had his first four-hit game in his second start since coming up from the minors to replace injured center fielder Carlos Gomez.

Delino DeShields matched a career high with four hits, all singles that included two bunts and another infield hit.

Shin-Soo Choo had three hits with three RBIs among a season-high 17 hits for the Rangers, who matched the Yankees for the longest winning streak this season and are on their best run since August 2013. The defending AL West champs (21-20) are over .500 for the first time this year.

Zach Eflin (0-1) allowed 11 hits and seven runs in four innings as the Phillies dropped to 3-11 in May. The right-hander hit Joey Gallo with a pitch to become the first Phillies pitcher since at least 1913 to hit a batter in five straight games.

RED SOX 5, CARDINALS 4, 13 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch-hitter Chris Young singled home the tiebreaking run in the 13th inning and Boston rallied past St. Louis to sweep their two-game interleague series.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer in the seventh off starter Mike Leake to begin Boston’s comeback from a four-run deficit. The Red Sox tied it in the eighth against reliever Trevor Rosenthal when Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI triple and scored on Andrew Benintendi’s sacrifice fly.

Mitch Moreland doubled with two outs in the 13th and Bradley was intentionally walked before Young singled off Sam Tuivailala (2-1).

Fernando Abad (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win, and Ben Taylor got three outs for his first major league save.

Dexter Fowler hit a leadoff homer for the Cardinals, who had won eight of 10.

Boston improved to 3-17 when trailing after seven innings, while St. Louis fell to 19-1 when leading after seven.

BREWERS 3, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jett Bandy singled in the go-ahead run with one out in the ninth inning and Milwaukee beat San Diego to take over first place in the NL Central.

The Brewers, who have won five of six, had only two hits going into the ninth before getting four straight with one out against reliever Brandon Maurer (0-3). Travis Shaw, who missed the previous two games with a swollen right index finger, started the rally with a double. Domingo Santana reached on a single that glanced off the glove of leaping shortstop Erick Aybar, and Bandy hit a bouncer up the middle to score Shaw.

Keon Broxton singled to load the bases, and Santana scored on Orlando Arcia’s groundout.

Jacob Barnes (1-0) pitched the eighth for the win, and Corey Knebel earned his second save.

The Padres wasted a brilliant effort by Jhoulys Chacin, who struck out eight in seven innings and retired 19 straight batters during one stretch.

MARINERS 4, ATHLETICS 0

SEATTLE (AP) — Christian Bergman pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning for the best start of his career, Jean Segura extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run single and Seattle blanked Oakland.

Bergman (1-1) held the Athletics hitless until the fifth in his first win since May 5, 2016, with Colorado against San Francisco. He had a career-high nine strikeouts and tied James Paxton for the most in a game by a Mariners pitcher this year.

Nelson Cruz drove in two runs for the Mariners, who took two of three in the series.

Jesse Hahn (1-3) gave up four runs — three earned — in five innings. Oakland has lost five of six.

ANGELS 12, WHITE SOX 8

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout homered for the fifth time in six games, Cameron Maybin had three more hits and the Los Angeles Angels completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox.

Trout’s 13th homer of the season, a three-run shot, keyed a four-run sixth inning for the Angels. Maybin, batting leadoff for the second time in an Angels uniform, went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and drew a walk a day after a career-best five hits.

Matt Shoemaker (3-2) gave up two runs in each of the first two innings, but settled down to earn the win. He finished with four runs allowed — three earned — and nine hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ryan Rua hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Texas Rangers stretched their MLB-best winning streak to nine games with an 8-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

The Rangers swept through an eight-game homestand against three teams, only the second time in franchise history they’ve done that. Their overall winning streak, which started with an 11-0 win at San Diego on May 9, is the longest in the majors this season.

Philadelphia led 2-0 before Robinson Chirinos and Rougned Odor had consecutive two-out RBI singles off reliever Joely Rodriguez (1-2) in the fifth. Rua followed with his third homer, lining a shot that just cleared the 8-foot wall in right field.

Martin Perez (2-5) struck out eight with no walks in seven innings.

TWINS 2, ROCKIES 0, 2ND GAME

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Berrios allowed two hits and struck out 11 over 7 2/3 innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Colorado Rockies salvaged a split of an interleague doubleheader between the first-place teams in the AL Central and NL West.

The Twins scored just three runs in the doubleheader, but Berrios (2-0) made his scant support in the nightcap hold up with the best outing of his young career. Brandon Kintzler worked a scoreless ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

The Twins got RBI singles from Max Kepler in the first inning and Robbie Grossman in the fourth. They were two of five hits allowed by Tyler Chatwood (3-6), who also walked five and struck out four in five innings.

In Game 1, Nolan Arenado homered and Mark Reynolds drove in two runs to lead the Rockies.

German Marquez (2-2) dodged trouble over five innings to limit the damage to a sacrifice fly by Brian Dozier. Greg Holland struck out Dozier to end the game for his franchise-record 18th consecutive save to start the season, after entering with runners at first and second.

Twins starter Ervin Santana (6-2), who took the mound with the major league lead in ERA (1.50), finished seven innings for the fifth time in nine tries, but two of the four walks he issued scored. He gave up six hits and all five runs.

BLUE JAYS 9, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) — Marcus Stroman threw 5 2/3 strong innings and hit the second homer by a pitcher in Blue Jays history to lead Toronto over Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves.

Darrell Ceciliani, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, had a run-scoring double in the first and a two-run homer in the third before leaving with a left shoulder injury. Ceciliani started in center field after Kevin Pillar was suspended two games without pay for yelling an anti-gay slur at Braves reliever Jason Motte during Wednesday night’s game.

Teheran hit Jose Bautista with a pitch in the first inning, a day after Bautista’s bat flip following a home run drew criticism from the Braves. Teheran (3-4) allowed a career-high nine runs in three-plus innings in his fourth straight home loss.

The Braves, who scored eight or more runs in three straight wins over Toronto with Freddie Freeman in the lineup, saw their offense disappear after learning the first baseman will miss about 10 weeks with a fractured left wrist.

TIGERS 6, ORIOLES 5

DETROIT (AP) — Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer off Dylan Bundy to put Detroit ahead in the fifth inning, and the Tigers went on to beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Jordan Zimmermann (4-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, and three relievers finished for Detroit. Alex Wilson pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.

Castillo tied it at 3 in the sixth with a towering two-run homer off Aaron Sanchez. The Blue Jays seemingly took the lead in the seventh when Baltimore reliever Darren O’Day struck out Justin Smoak with the bases loaded with two outs, but the ball got past Castillo, allowing a runner to score. After a manager’s review, however, Smoak was ruled out because the ball hit him during the swing, per major league rules.

Miller struck out two in the eighth and Allen allowed one hit in the ninth to convert his 12th save in as many opportunities and give him 21 straight dating to Aug. 18.

Lonnie Chisenhall had two hits and homered for the second straight day with a solo shot off Mike Fiers (1-2) in the fourth inning to help the Indians take their second straight from Houston.

METS 7, ANGELS 5

NEW YORK (AP) — Jose Reyes had three instrumental hits, including the 2,000th of his career, and Terry Collins made the right moves on a milestone night as the New York Mets held off the Los Angeles Angels.

New York gave up three runs in a nervous ninth inning before fill-in closer Addison Reed struck out pinch-hitter Danny Espinosa on a full-count fastball with the bases loaded for his sixth save.

Collins became the longest-tenured manager in team history, passing Davey Johnson (1984-90) by reaching 1,013 games with the Mets. The oldest skipper in the majors, seven days shy of his 68th birthday, massaged an unreliable bullpen through four innings after starter Zack Wheeler (3-2) unraveled in the sixth.

Angels rookie Alex Meyer (2-2) allowed four runs — three earned — and three hits in four-plus innings. The 6-foot-9 righty also singled on an 0-2 slider from Wheeler in his first plate appearance since high school.

ORIOLES 7, BLUE JAYS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) — Welington Castillo hit a go-ahead home run for the second consecutive game to lead the Baltimore Orioles past the Toronto Blue Jays at sold-out Camden Yards.

Jose Bautista had given Toronto a 5-4 lead with a three-run homer off winning pitcher Mychal Givens (5-0) in the seventh. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Chad Pinder hit a monster home run, Khris Davis and Mark Canha also connected in the fifth inning, and the Oakland Athletics cleared the fences four times in all to beat the Boston Red Sox for their third straight win.

Hanley Ramirez homered for Boston, which has lost three in a row.

Jed Lowrie had a solo shot in the sixth for Oakland, which leads the AL with 63 home runs. A’s manager Bob Melvin didn’t see any of them in person after being ejected in the second inning.

While no official records are kept, the A’s said Pinder’s deep drive into the plaza reserved section is believed to be just the fourth home run to reach the second-deck seating level since it was built in 1996. San Francisco’s Jarrett Parker had the last one in 2015 and Larry Walker did it for Colorado in 1999. Mark McGwire hit one that far against Cleveland in 1996.

Canha homered leading off the fifth against Ben Taylor (0-1). Sean Manaea (2-3) allowed two earned runs in five innings.

RAYS 9, YANKEES 5

Yankees rookie Aaron Judge hit his 15th home run, most in the majors. He also doubled and has a career-best eight-game hitting streak.

New York manager Joe Girardi used his hands to cover the plate with dirt after being tossed by umpire Scott Barry in the fifth inning. That came right after pitching coach Larry Rothschild was ejected by Barry during a mound visit.

Rays starter Matt Andriese hit Matt Holliday after giving up a home run to Gary Sanchez in the fifth. In the bottom half, Yankees reliever Tommy Layne plunked Dickerson, who had hit two home runs off Masahiro Tanaka. Andriese (4-1) hit Judge with a pitch leading off the sixth and was thrown out. The 6-foot-7 Judge dropped his bat and calmly went to first base after being struck.

Giants starter Jeff Samardzija threw eight innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight. Hunter Strickland (1-1), Derek Law and Josh Osich pitched in relief for the Giants, who won for the seventh time in eight games. Mark Melancon earned his eighth save.

The game was stopped for 42 minutes after the 10th inning for a rain delay.

REDS 12, ROCKIES 8

CINCINNATI (AP) — Scott Schebler’s homer completed Cincinnati’s comeback from a five-run deficit, and the Reds ended a seven-game losing streak — their longest in a year — with a victory over the Colorado Rockies.

It was Cincinnati’s longest skid since it dropped 11 straight last May.

Colorado rookie Antonio Senzatela was in line for an NL-leading seventh win before the Rockies’ bullpen let the big lead slip away. Senzatela had a bases-loaded single during a six-run fifth inning that put the Rockies ahead 8-3.

Devin Mesoraco hit a solo homer to start the Reds’ sixth against Chad Qualls, who faced only four batters. Schebler’s three-run shot off Mike Dunn (2-1) finished a six-run rally.

Garcia wasn’t alone in pounding Seattle’s pitching staff. Matt Davidson hit a two-run homer, Willy Garcia hit the first home run of his career and the 16 runs were the most scored by the White Sox since April 20, 2014, at Texas when they also scored 16.
